HISTORY  OF  THE  CITY
The earliest known form of the name of the city has been found in the old town Lindenhof on a tombstone dating from the 2nd century AD. It referes to "STA(TIONIS) TURICEN(SIS)", the Roman tax collecting point called «Turicum».
The first development towards its German formula is attested  as early as the 7th century with the form "Ziurichi". In 857, it is formalized in "Zurih" and it takes the final form of "Zurich" in 924.
Permanently settled since the Neolitic times when the Celts Helvetii occupied the region, the history of Zurich goes back to its founding  by the Romans who, in 15 BC, called it Turicum after their conquest of the eastern part of Helvetia. In 730 Zurich becomes part of the Frankish-ruled Alemannia to finally integrate the Confederatio Helvetica , on Mai 1st, 1351.
